  1. Well.., I was a little disappointnet that you didn’t mention the work (books) that Noam Chomsky has done in this field, like ” Manufacturing Consent ” and ” Necessary Illusions “.

  2. thanks to nuero science they will be able to literally read our minds. everytime you think of a word, or say it, a chain of neurons fire signifying that you said, or thought, about that word. and maybe in computer monitors there is technology that watches our eyeballs and our neurons so that as we read sentences on the screen it is also associating the words we are reading with the firings of our neurons. just a conspiracy theory

  3. One of my favorite subliminal messages was in an old capitalist propaganda video a friend showed me, I wish I still had a link to it.

The film was made for second graders, and when talking of capitalism and the free market it showed a family at a carnival while playing festive music. When the topic changed to socialism, the music became somber and the voice changed, and the festive carnival was replaced with scenes of coldness, desolation, and tyranny.

Was it effective? Ask joe american.

  4. Dawn of History – 1900’s the greatest crimes in human history were committed by empaths inflamed in their passions and convinced of their righteousness
1900-??? the greatest crimes are and will be committed by business men simply doing business.

There are a variety of techniques by which subliminal messages can be highly effective, simply flashing “Hungry eat popcorn” isn’t going to work.

Image and Sound association designed to establish connections at an emotional level for example.

  5. I see a severe dystopia in our near future as predicted by the models used in Limits to growth and Beyond the limits. We are well into overshoot and are drawing down resources far faster than the earth can replenish them. According to all 3 books (72,92 and 02) the problems begin in this decade and we can already see this with peak oil, AGW, depleted fisheries etc.

  6. How would it be even possible to display a message for 1/300th of a second when you are dealing with a 24fps movie projector? Did they say they had a second projector that could run at 300fps?

  7. -In the future (if TV still exists) I think:
You can block adds that does´nt concern you with a simple push of a button on the remote. (get something els) Skip to the next topic on the news / or learn-more (like in Robocop). And you can probably buy product-placements / download music etc with an other button. Look at facebook: If you change your relationship-status you turn on or off the “find love-adds”. TV is a blunt tool for adds in comparence. Radio should sell MP3-downloads already.

  8. @quaxk
Not in magazines I saw a documentary that was made in Quebec about this subject.
At one point they took 6 adds from a teen magazine and 6 adds from an porno mag and out of context people couldn’t tell the difference.
I really wish I could remember the name of the doc because it’s something every parent should watch.

  9. I agree, BBC is a prime example of good programming. In the US however our public transit sucks through corruption and the idea that private sector does everything better sadly makes this sort of dream near impossible for the US

  10. Call me an idealist, but I believe TV, Radio and Internet should be publicy funded. They are 3 of the major infrastructures of the 20th and 21st century and are essential to modern life in the 1st world.
I see no good reason why a service desired and needed by the populace of an entire nation should be privatized for the profit of a few.
We have publicly funded and accessable personal transport infrastructure, why not publicly funded information transportation infrastructure?

  11. Plus as congress has decided that corporations have the same rights as people, it would take an ammendment to overturn that making it seriously impossible without a massive national shift.

  12. I watched that Consuming Kids documentary you linked to.

I’m not sure why but I almost never responded to advertisements and I wasn’t into brands and products. And even at 8 or 9 I disliked logos and found the thought embarrassing because I was advertising myself as a fan of something I wasn’t a fan of. The only thing I was willing to be a billboard for was Goosebumps books.

  13. I would agree but at the same time someone has to pay for television programming. Limitations and restrictions are needed however.

  14. Hahaha, if you knew the corruptness of the US politicians then you would understand why this is such an insurmountable task. Why Canada and Europe are looking to be much freer places than the US when this technology picks up if we haven’t changed by then.

  15. just FYI, advertising targeted at children has been illegal in Quebec for decades, I don’t understand why you make this goal look so difficult to achieve, you just need to pass a law

  16. In my opinion, current advertisement already goes to far. I believe corps shouldn’t have the right to waste my precious time and/or bandwidth with things I don’t even want.
I’m not interested in buying your crappy products & if i was, i’d go look at your ads on my own time & do some research.
Force feededing ads, should be akin to mind rape. It’s my life, someone else shouldn’t be allowed to dictate what I view, hear, smell, etc.
