Be Your Own Therapist

Google Tech Talks October 3, 2008 ABSTRACT We spend our lives being seduced by the outside world, believing without question that happiness and suffering come from “out there.” In reality, Buddhist teachings explain that they come from the way we perceive and interpret things, not the things themselves. This deeply held misconception is at the root of our dissatisfaction, self-doubt, anger, depression, anxiety, and the rest. But our minds can change. By becoming deeply familiar with the workings of our own cognitive processes through introspection and learning to deconstruct them – truly, being our own therapists – we can loosen the grip of these neuroses and grow our marvelous potential for contentment, clarity, and courage, which are at the core of our being. Speaker: Venerable Robina Courtin A Tibetan Buddhist nun for 30 years, beloved teacher and power-house personality, Ven. 1. I was 20 & also a spiritual teacher from India, called me sweetheart after his secretary gave me a hard time cause I was sent bringing his breakfast in what she thought it was the most unapropriate moment! then he appeared again while I was so surprised! and he said: do not worry sweetheart, just leave everything there, he made my day, I remember that moment (30 yrs ago) he was my spiritual teacher, not many people had the chance to bring him breakfast! but me! she apologized 3 yrs ago! Luv her

  2. Also the first time I’ve heard one say “stupid and arrogant.” The answer to the question was brilliant: it’s not about calling yourself a Buddhist: “You’re the boss!”

  3. Regardless of conceptual exchanges in the stead of intellectual deciphering of a pragmatic process to bring the mind’s power to itself, to indeed therapize one’s own thoughts is a constant practice of calm logic. The mind loves riddles. The mind itself is a decoding machine for reality, how it decodes is in choices. Choices you make in what you think, say, do, believe, and base your lifestyle around. Remember what is practicable, gives you results, heals your mind. Love compassion. It loves you.

  4. @hqahbmq yeah. even i was ignorant about these shocking foods that burn belly fat. and i can suggest u , i can see a massive change in my abs after trying out this crazy trick. we can trust it. you can also try it. -> bit.ly/UAkHmF?=rtniyv

  5. It is a shame she is speaking so rapidly, because her message is good. It is difficult to follow her though because of that. And it makes the dharma talk less relaxing.

  6. interesting theory. from travelling all over Asia I can tell you though that Buddha is worshipped as a god in many established varieties of buddhism all over the world.
But feel free to introduce dogma to buddhism In my opinion however people do with buddha whatever they want, as I’m not a buddhist.

  7. teaching of the buddha are just that. teachings, the buddha was a teacher, and he taught the path to freedom of suffering. you do not worship the buddha as a god. he is merely a teacher. i dont think you will get far into buddhism because your faith seems to be with islam, and thats good. you found your path, others will find their own.

  8. this was absolutely amazing!! lots of confirmation, messages and validation for myself personaly! bravo!!! wonderful job! we need more women like her in this world- namaste M

  9. I think she’s referring to the general attitude about the homeless. When you walk by a homeless person, do you think “Oh, there’s my fellow human being, who deserves same respect as me regardless of what he look or acts like”, or do you think “Look at that dirty drunk bum, he better not come close to me. He’s the scum of the earth.” I think you’ll find that most people would lean to the second. And I can’t say I blame them.

  10. I agree with Ariel. She used the phrase to help her convey the message that having material things isn’t the problem—the problem is believing that material possessions are what make you happy. By saying homeless people are “the scum of the earth,” I think she just meant that they are extreme examples of ascetics, and not desirable example to follow. She could have chosen a better phrase, though!

  11. i want you to tell me what is BUDDIST RELIGION about, this kind of religions are false, ISLAM is the only religion who worshipping to only one true GOD, the one who created Universe, the one who created HEAVEN without any pillars that you can see, so why are you worshipping other than ALLAH? God said in the Holly Quran DO NOT make any partners with ALLAH is indeed a TREMENDOUS INEQUITY, please read the Holly Quran even if you hate Islam just in case, what does God say, i hope you find your way?

  12. I interpreted that as “[They are viewed as] the scum of the earth.” The Buddha was homeless while searching for Enlightenment, and he certainly wasn’t scum!

  14. Just came across this and realized that this lady thinks like I do.
I’ve never knew much about Buddha but now I do. Great video!
